CBS Evening News<\/i> anchor Tony Dokoupil marked the firing of 60 Minutes<\/i> correspondent Scott Pelley with a montage and glowing praise for the journalist. <\/p>\n

Pelley, who had been with CBS since 1989, was fired on Tuesday by newly installed 60 Minutes<\/i> executive Nick Bilton. The day before, Pelley had confronted Bilton in front of the show\u2019s staff over high-profile firings and his future plans. CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss, he also claimed, was \u201cmurdering\u201d 60 Minutes<\/i>.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Pelley claimed Weiss had lied to staff when she told them that she and other executives had tried to \u201cfind a way back\u201d with Pelley. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On that night\u2019s broadcast of the CBS Evening News<\/i>, chief correspondent Jim Axelrodreported on the circumstances of Pelley\u2019s firing. Afterward, Dokoupil highlighted Pelley\u2019s long history at the network.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I started at CBS, Scott Pelley was in this very chair, and still doing a dozen stories a year for 60 Minutes, <\/i>and amid all of that, still meeting every new correspondent to share his view of the mission here,\u201d Dokoupil began. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe believed freedom of the press, to quote [James] Madison, was \u2018the right that guaranteed all the others.\u2019 And the stakes are always that high in that if you\u2019d made it to CBS News, you were among the best in the world,\u201d Dokoupil continued. \u201cHe worked every single day to live up to that standard.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dokoupil has anchored the CBS Evening News<\/i> since January, after Weiss named him to the role. Paramount CEO David Ellison tapped Weiss to lead the newsroom, despite her having no prior broadcast television experience, in an effort to make the network more palatable to conservative audiences.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, Dokoupil rolled clips from Pelley\u2019s array of coverage, from the post-9\/11 cleanup and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the war against Ukraine and the famine in Darfur. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe was in some ways a man from another era, and that\u2019s not a knock,\u201d Dokoupil, 45, said of 68-year-old multiple Emmy-winner. \u201cHe didn\u2019t watch the competition, he said, because he knew who he was. A journalist who valued truth at all costs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pelley, he added, \u201calways kept alive the memory of colleagues killed in the field\u2014a reminder that his chosen line of work could be a dangerous one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dokoupil also noted that it was Pelley who removed the \u201cwith Scott Pelley\u201d line in the CBS Evening News<\/i> logo. In its place was: \u201cwith all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Scott,\u201d Dokoupil said, \u201cfrom all of us, thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dokoupil\u2019s time in the anchor\u2019s chair hasn\u2019t been without rough patches. <\/p>\n

In his first week, he had awkward technical difficulties, was criticized for praising Marco Rubio as the \u201cultimate Florida man,\u201d and gave a meek treatment of the fifth anniversary of the Jan. 6 insurrection. <\/p>\n

In the following weeks and months, overall viewership of the CBS Evening News <\/i>consistently trailed rival news broadcasts on ABC and NBC.<\/p>\n
