President Donald Trump is doing what the Obama administration worked to avoid, one of the former president\u2019s national security advisers says. <\/p>\n

Ben Rhodes, the Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications and Speechwriting throughout Obama\u2019s eight years in office, told The Daily Beast Podcast<\/i>that the Oval Office\u2019s current occupant is making \u201cstupid\u201d mistakes when dealing with Iran. And that Trump\u2019s preference for advisers such as Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner over subject-matter experts was especially concerning.<\/p>\n

Rhodes explained that during negotiations over the Iran nuclear deal, which the Trump administration withdrew from in 2018, Obama used a variety of experts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAny expert you could think of, we found the best one related to these negotiations and had them supporting the work. I don\u2019t think a single one of those people is still in the U.S. government, because they\u2019re the kind of people that were purged by Trump,\u201d Rhodes told host Joanna Coles.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut part of what I think and I can feel has happened is that not only do they not know anything about what they\u2019re negotiating\u2014I mean, they don\u2019t know the mechanics of how\u2026 uranium is mined and milled and put through centrifuges\u2014but they\u2019ve gotten rid of all the experts,\u201c he said. <\/p>\n

\u201dThe National Security Council, [which] I used to work on, used to have a staff of some 250 people,\u201c Rhodes explained. \u201cPeople said that was too big. OK, maybe a little bit. But I think the last I\u2019ve heard is that now there\u2019s like 25 or 30 people in the White House working on this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ve gotten rid of all of USAID. They\u2019ve attacked their own intelligence community. They got rid of the experts who said that the Iranian nuclear program wasn\u2019t obliterated,\u201d Rhodes continued, while also making note of the 100-plus vacancies in U.S. ambassadorships.<\/p>\n

Rhodes then addressed how Trump\u2019s \u201crecklessness\u201d and \u201cincompetence\u201d were on display in how he underestimated Iran\u2019s willingness to close the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n

In the Obama administration, he explained, a conflict with Iran was gamed out in part because Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was \u201cconstantly pressing us to go to war with Iran and bomb their nuclear facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was never in a war game in which the first thing the Iranians did wasn\u2019t to close the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d he recalled. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think what you get in Iran is this weird convergence of Trump\u2019s recklessness and incompetence,\u201d Rhodes said. \u201cThe cost of getting rid of all that expertise for so many years, because it was in Trump\u2019s first term, too\u2014all this is converging in this one event because he is reckless enough to listen to Netanyahu and think, \u2018If I do this, I\u2019ll collapse the Iranian regime and be a hero,\u2019 and incompetent enough to not have had experts who were like, \u2018Hey, they\u2019d close the Strait of Hormuz and paralyze the global economy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s war on Iran, which has lasted more than three months, killed 13 U.S. service members and caused more than 1,000 civilian deaths, qualifies as \u201cstupid s–t,\u201d Rhodes said.<\/p>\n

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Obama\u2019s 2015 Iran nuclear deal was struck because it was the best one possible, Rhodes said, amid suggestions from outsiders to hold out for a better one.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd so if you don\u2019t do a deal and don\u2019t want Iran to get a nuclear weapon, at some point you\u2019re going to end up in a war,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd that would be stupid. And here we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
