The move codifies an executive order Trump signed last fall, resurrecting a name the U.S. military bureaucracy last used in the 1940s.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Representative Adam Smith, of Washington and the committee\u2019s top Democrat, was forthright in his assessment of the effort. \u201cOne of the dumbest things that has been done by this administration,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s semantic nonsense at a time when we have a lot of substantive arguments.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The amendment was introduced by Republican Representative Ronny Jackson of Texas, a hard-line Trump ally, who framed the rebrand in soaring terms. \u201cRestoring the name Department of War sends an unmistakable signal to the world,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cDeterrence only works when adversaries believe America is willing to fight and win to secure its interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has already taken to calling himself secretary of war, celebrated the vote on social media. \u201cThe Department of War will officially be restored soon,\u201d he posted.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=774\">Whistleblower Exposes Trump Goons\u2019 Jaw-Dropping Social Security Plot<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that a full renaming could run as high as $125 million\u2014a number that landed badly with Democrats already furious over the bill\u2019s $1 trillion overall price tag and what they described as a lack of meaningful guardrails around the nearly 100-day war with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat Representative Pat Ryan of New York, one of a dozen Democrats who voted against the broader bill, did not mince words. \u201cIt\u2019s performative bulls&#8211;t,\u201d he said. \u201cI think ending on that performative note summed up the whole situation.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The broader National Defense Authorization Act\u2014now carrying the renaming provision\u2014cleared the committee in a bipartisan 44-12 vote, though the dozen Democratic no votes made it the panel\u2019s most partisan such vote in years.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The name change still faces a steep climb.
