The Trump administration promised an economic \u201cD-Day\u201d for Iran\u2014only to deliver a sanctions rollout that critics immediately mocked as anything but.<\/p>\n

As the conflict in the Middle East drags on, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled a new package on Monday seeking to completely isolate Iran from the global financial system with a sweeping wave of sanctions against the country and \u201cenablers\u201d tied to its oil, shipping, banking and weapons network.<\/p>\n

\n

But after days of hyping an economic offensive that would supposedly bring Tehran to heel, the announcement was branded a \u201cjoke\u201d after it failed to offer a clear timeline, sweeping penalties or nation targets.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bessent was confronted about his plans falling short during a press conference on Monday, in which he declared that world leaders would have to \u201cmake a decision\u201d between \u201cAmerica and Iran.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet there be no ambiguity as to the position of the United States,\u201d he said. \u201cAn economic engagement of any kind with this murderous regime will expose those responsible to the full reach of American power.\u201d<\/p>\n

But things took an awkward turn when a reporter asked the Treasury Secretary: \u201cYou described this as an economic D-Day, but D-Day wasn\u2019t a threat of an invasion, and the U.S. didn\u2019t give a timeline to Germany. So why not impose sanctions today?\u201d<\/p>\n

After a brief pause, Bessent replied: \u201cWell, we are giving everyone the opportunity to remedy bad behavior. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would I want to blow up the global financial system?\u201d he added. \u201cWe believe that it is important to level set and give people a cure period, but they should know that that will move very quickly and that we are serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

The online backlash was swift. <\/p>\n

Former Republican Ron Filipkowski, now the editor of MidasTouch, wrote on X: \u201cSo Bessent\u2019s \u201ceconomic DDay\u201d announcement is that zero sanctions are announced against anyone specifically, and when asked if China or other huge mutual trading partners of Iran and the US will be sanctioned he says they will engage \u201cin quiet diplomacy\u201d with them. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former GOP Congressman Adam Kinzinger added: \u201cHe\u2019s not very good at this.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Democrat Senator Chris Murphy described the plan as \u201cdesperate window dressing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIran is winning the war. Trump is losing. And Americans are paying a huge, huge cost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The package announced on Monday, dubbed \u201cOperation Economic Outcast,\u201d comes despite the fact that the Islamic Republic has faced decades of American and international sanctions and still survived, largely by increasing its ties to Russia and China. <\/p>\n

Asked about Chinese banks, which are known to process sales of Iranian oil, Bessent said that \u201cno one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions\u201d but did not mention Beijing directly. <\/p>\n

Minutes before his press conference, Donald Trump also took to Truth Social to post a series of friendly images of him and Chinese president Xi Jinping, who will visit the White House next month.<\/p>\n

All up, the Treasury is expected to sanction 60 global entities, individuals and vessels that allow Iran to procure nuclear and missile technology. <\/p>\n

Additional sanctions related to digital assets, shipping, technology, gold, and aviation would also be issued.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThis is economic asphyxiation of this regime,\u201d Bessent said, \u201cand no one should test our resolve.\u201d<\/p>\n
