Melania Trump has dropped all pretense of fulfilling the traditional duties of a first lady, the president\u2019s longtime biographer has alleged.<\/p>\n

Author Michael Wolff said Melania\u2019s long-awaited appearance at the White House on Thursday, which marked her first public outing in over a month, proves that she had \u201cabdicated\u201d the role of first lady.<\/p>\n

Melania, 56, reemerged to join President Donald Trump, 80, in the White House Rose Garden for an event celebrating the expansion of her Fostering the Future Initiative. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI heard you missed me. Here I am,\u201d she said with a smile. \u201cHere I am! Welcome to the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolff mused that Melania\u2019s remark hid something more sinister.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would just like to say that there is a fine line between a tease and a taunt,\u201d he told Inside Trump\u2019s Head <\/i>co-host, Joanna Coles. \u201cAnd I think she has gone over it and that this is actually a taunt. \u2018You know I\u2019m not here, I know I\u2019m not here, everybody knows I\u2019m not here, but f\u2014 you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Coles asked, \u201cAnd is that to the president or is that to us?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it is to everybody and also to the president,\u201d Wolff answered. \u201cShe comes and goes as she pleases. She\u2019s unregulated. She is defying, or maybe the better word is, she\u2019s abdicating the official first lady role, which is to be a model of domestic propriety and to do good works. So she\u2019s clearly not the model of domestic propriety, to say the very least.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fostering the Future, an initiative Melania launched in 2021, provides foster children with scholarships to colleges and universities across the country. On Thursday, Melania announced that the initiative was expanding its national network thanks to a $2 million donation from Fox Corporation and IndyCar, owned by racing billionaire Roger Penske.<\/p>\n

But Wolff said even the expansion of Melania\u2019s scholarship program appeared to serve a personal interest.<\/p>\n

\u201cTheoretically, she was in Washington to make an announcement about good works she was supporting, but it\u2019s a weird kind of corporate interaction, a sponsorship,\u201d he said. \u201cReally, what this was is a promotional event for Penske, for a corporate interest, the Penske family corporate interests.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wolff continued, \u201cSo what she has interposed herself in\u2014and she has been out there actually cultivating sponsors for herself, for her own business. So really her official job, the official part of being a first lady to do good works, she has converted into private enterprise for herself. That\u2019s what she spends most of her time on: monetizing this theoretical\u2014and highly theoretical role\u2014that she has as the first lady and the wife of Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n

Melania\u2019s curiously light workload this summer was laid bare in a damning audit by the Daily Beast. An analysis of the first lady\u2019s diary found that she has been publicly spotted on only 38 days as of July 31. Two of those scant appearances, including one radio interview, promoted her eponymous documentary.<\/p>\n

But astonishingly, Melania\u2019s 2026 record thus far already outpaces her performance in 2025, when she appeared in public 47 times after Trump\u2019s inauguration.<\/p>\n

A Daily Beast review found that in the equivalent period, from January 2009 to August 2010, Michelle Obama made 130 speeches. Jill Biden, who also worked as an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College during her time as first lady, gave 43 speeches in the same 18-month period upon moving into the White House. <\/p>\n

The numbers show that Melania\u2019s workload was only 22 percent of Michelle\u2019s and two-thirds of Jill\u2019s, who was also working another job.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cAmong all of the things that we have never seen in a White House, this is another,\u201d Wolff said. \u201cThe first lady here is a corporate shill, and the first lady is someone who is not the first lady. I mean, at least who is not the first lady who occupies the White House.\u201d<\/p>\n
