Donald Trump\u2019s handpicked Republican National Committee chair reached for a spectacular cop-out after being handed the receipts on the president\u2019s broken promises.<\/p>\n

RNC leader Joe Gruters was taken on an awkward trip down memory lane during an appearance on NewsNation on Sunday, when host Blake Burman played a montage of Trump\u2019s 2024 campaign pledges that have since gone unfulfilled. <\/p>\n

\n

During various rallies, Trump vowed to \u201cend the devastating inflation crisis immediately,\u201d \u201ccut the price of energy and electricity in half,\u201d and to get gasoline \u201cbelow $2 a gallon.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Burman then laid out the economic reality for Gruters, who has been charged with keeping Republicans in control of their slim majorities in Congress. <\/p>\n

\u201cBut here\u2019s part of the record,\u201d Burman said. \u201cInflation: 3.5 percent\u2014that is now, according to government figures, higher than the 3.2 percent for nationwide earnings.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGas, not $2 a gallon. As we all know, it\u2019s double that at $4,\u201d he continued. \u201cElectricity prices haven\u2019t been cut in half, as the president talked about. They continue to go up and to the right, and GDP is at 1.5 percent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burman confronted Gruters with the question hanging over Republicans with just 85 days until the midterms: \u201cWhy do Republicans deserve to keep power in Washington if that\u2019s part of the scorecard?\u201d <\/p>\n

But rather than make a case for Republicans\u2019 economic agenda, Gruters took a swipe at voters\u2019 \u201cmemories\u201d as he sought to turn the clock backward with a bizarre excuse. <\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have short memories, and they forget that Biden or Biden\u2019s economic, uhh, disastrous, uhh, the, you know, reign led us to the high, much higher inflation, higher gas prices,\u201d the 49-year-old RNC chair said. \u201cAnd this president from day one has been working on getting these things under control.\u201d<\/p>\n

Burman cut in to deliver a reality check: \u201cInflation was 3 percent when he took office… and now it\u2019s higher than that, Joe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gruters appeared to inadvertently make the case for Joe Biden\u2019s success in bringing inflation down, saying, \u201cInflation was at 9 percent under Biden.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThis is certainly Biden\u2019s price\u2014prices, uhh, that we\u2019re still dealing with and we\u2019re still getting under control.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo is it the Biden economy then?\u201d Burman pressed, eyebrows raised. \u201cI mean, if it\u2019s Biden\u2019s prices…\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Biden\u2019s disastrous economic record,\u201d Gruters replied, before claiming that Trump had secured billions of dollars in investments \u201cthat you\u2019re not going to see right away.\u201d <\/p>\n

He appeared to allude to the economic fallout from Trump\u2019s war with Iran, saying: \u201cSometimes these national security issues come up. Listen, he\u2019s a peace through strength guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s going to get this under control, and we\u2019re going to get prices back down. But, yes, people need to have faith that the Republican Party and this president cares about them, and we\u2019re going to move this forward,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n

It may be too late for Trump and the GOP. Just 32 percent of voters approve of Trump\u2019s economic performance, according to an AP-NORC poll published last week, and Democrats have overtaken Republicans on economic trust for the first time in nearly a decade.<\/p>\n
