The driver took one look at the object and warned Martin it \u201ccould really be live ordnance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018I have military training, and that really looks like it could be the real deal,\u2019\u201d Martin recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Martin immediately contacted the Atascosa County Sheriff\u2019s Office, which requested assistance from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Lackland Air Force Base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was really some sort of dummy,\u201d Martin told KABB\u2019s Destany Fuller. \u201cNow I\u2019m thinking this thing is making a dummy out of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bomb technicians confirmed the object was a Civil War-era Parrott round, an artillery shell designed by engineer Robert Parrott in the mid-1800s that was considered an active explosive.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=5135\">Trump\u2019s \u2018Treasonous\u2019 Leaker Hunt Backfires With Epic Self-Own<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll this time I had this antique bomb there that potentially could have exploded,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Chief Eric Kaiser said discoveries like the one are exceptionally rare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing that those things are still turning up almost 200 years later,\u201d Kaiser said. \u201cPeople stumble across ordnance from time to time, but usually it\u2019s not anywhere near as old as that one was.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities transported the shell to Camp Bullis, where EOD specialists safely detonated it.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Martin said he had hoped the historic artifact could be preserved, particularly because he has ancestors who fought in the Civil War. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>He now plans to be more careful about the items he displays on his desk. \u201cIf somebody hands you something, it might be a hot potato.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=5134\">Hiker, 19, Plunges 50 Feet to His Death<\/a><\/p>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What Steve Martin thought was a harmless paperweight piece sitting on his office desk for years turned out to be a live Civil War-era explosive.
