He did, however, concede that there\u2019s pressure to retire.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Such nudges are \u201cnot pleasant,\u201d Alito noted, \u201cin the sense that it\u2019s a reminder of mortality. It\u2019s like, what are those vultures doing up there? They are flying around. But it goes with life tenure.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The biggest criticism of the deeply conservative justice\u2019s controversial opinions is that he\u2019s simply rubber-stamping President Donald Trump\u2019s policies, regardless of what the Constitution demands. <\/p>\n<p>Alito and his conservative cohort, Clarence Thomas, dissented from all three major Supreme Court decisions Trump lost: those challenging the independence of the Federal Reserve, those upholding limits on Trump\u2019s ability to unilaterally institute tariffs, and the one banning birthright citizenship.<\/p>\n<p>Yet Alito insisted to the Journal: \u201cI vote in every case the way I think the case should be decided. If that means a high correlation with what Trump wants, fine. If it means zero correlation with what Trump wants, fine as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alito also emphasized that he has never ruled one way in some cases and another way in others simply to create the appearance of objectivity\u2014so that \u201cpeople will say, \u2018Well, he\u2019s objective, because sometimes he favors this side and other times he favors that side.\u2019\u201d Instead, he said, \u201cI\u2019m going to decide them all the way that I think they should be decided. People can agree, people can disagree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=5101\">Trump, 80, Sets Sights on New Government Office He Plans to Loot<\/a><\/p>\n<p>It may seem straightforward now, but Alito\u2019s former high school English teacher, Elaine Tarr\u2014who was quoted in Peter Canellos\u2019 book, <i>Revenge for the Sixties: Sam Alito and the Triumph of the Conservative Legal Movement\u2014<\/i>was surprised by what turned out to be Alito\u2019s conservative bent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSam had a strong moral compass,\u201d Tarr said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I believed at the time\u2014he was straight and narrow. I think he had a sense of right and wrong. Where Sam has picked up all of these ideas now, you\u2019ve got me&#8230; How has he become this ultra, ultra conservative?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was very responsible, made sure everything was on the dotted line,\u201d Tarr continued. \u201cEven his penmanship was very well formed. There was nothing sloppy about it. He was very methodical, very methodical. Does that equate with rigidity? I\u2019m not going to answer that one. How flexible a thinker was he? I\u2019m not sure about that either.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When confronted with Tarr\u2019s quotes, Alito told the Journal that her observations were \u201cnews to me.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was a very good teacher, and she did make an important contribution to my education by urging me to read more broadly,\u201d he said. \u201cSo I won\u2019t say anything. I didn\u2019t know that she had said that, and I didn\u2019t know that her views about me had changed in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Alito may have been surprised by his former teacher\u2019s assessment.
