Nothing about that makes sense to me,\u201d he added. <\/p>\n<p>But the idea is crashing into opposition from business leaders and the travel industry. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny reduction in Customs and Border Protection operations at major U.S. gateway airports threatens to cause unnecessary chaos throughout the nation\u2019s air transportation system,\u201d a coalition of 17 travel and business trade groups wrote in a statement Friday. <\/p>\n<p>The coalition, which included the U.S. Travel Association and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said that \u201coperational changes at a small number of gateway airports will quickly ripple across the country.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe urge DHS to avoid actions that would create unnecessary operational and economic consequences for communities nationwide,\u201d they wrote. \u201cNow is the time to strengthen America\u2019s gateway infrastructure, not weaken it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DHS and CBP did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n<p>The White House referred the Daily Beast back to the DHS when reached for comment. <\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department\u2019s list of \u201csanctuary\u201d cities, which allegedly have policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration officials, includes several of the nation\u2019s biggest international travel hubs, such as New York City, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=433\">Trump Goon Insists \u2018Americans Spending More\u2019 Is Good News<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The airports in those cities collectively handle hundreds of millions of passengers each year, which generates tens of billions of dollars in commercial activity, while also processing billions in imports daily. <\/p>\n<p>Still, Mullin, 48, has been \u201cobsessed\u201d with his idea since replacing Noem, and keeps pushing it unprompted during meetings at the White House, one Trump official told CNN. <\/p>\n<p>One of the airports Mullin has put in his sights is Newark Liberty International Airport, suggesting he could pull customs officers to quell protests at the Delaney Hall ICE detention center in the city. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf local law enforcement isn\u2019t going to help, then we have to provide what assets we have,\u201d he told Newsmax last week, adding, \u201cTherefore, we won\u2019t be able to process international flights going to those airports, because those officers will be reassigned.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But travel industry representatives told The New York Times that shutting down customs at Newark alone would risk an estimated $8 billion in yearly travel spending and about $100 million in daily imports.
