A Pentagon website has removed the names of four U.S. service members killed in Donald Trump\u2019s war with Iran from its list of casualties.<\/p>\n

The Defense Casualty Analysis System, a Defense Department website that keeps track of those killed during Operation Epic Fury, currently has a tally of seven \u201chostile\u201d and seven \u201cnon-hostile\u201d casualties, for a total of 14. But that\u2019s four less than the number of deaths the site had listed on Wednesday, The New York Times reported.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also less than the number that Trump himself has acknowledged. One death, he said on Thursday, \u201cis too many, but it\u2019s 18.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to the Times, there are conflicting reasons for the website removing the names of the four service members who died over the last week.<\/p>\n

Acting Pentagon Press Secretary Joel Valdez told the paper that there had been \u201ctemporary data disruptions.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe department attempted to explain the anomalies to The New York Times ahead of publication, but given their lack of knowledge in this area, they proceeded to write a non-story,\u201d Valdez told the Times in a statement. \u201cWe remain committed to ensuring the utmost accuracy of all casualty reporting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yet three military officials told the Times that one reason for the change was because the troops\u2019 deaths took place after Trump declared a cease fire in April.<\/p>\n

That cease fire proved not to hold, and the war continues on, well after the president said he would bring it to a close.<\/p>\n

When reached for comment, the Pentagon referred the Daily Beast to a statement posted to X byspokesperson Sean Parnell. <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is one of the worst instances of the Fake News media manufacturing lies out of thin air for absolutely no reason at all but to cause distress among the American people,\u201d Parnell wrote. \u201cOur Pentagon Press Office gave the New York Times a courtesy off-the-record phone call explaining in detail that the site errors on the Defense Casualty Analysis System (DCAS) were due to a temporary data disruption. Our team explained we are working on it being resolved in coordination with the Military Services.\u201d <\/p>\n

Parnell included the statement from Valdez in his own, adding, \u201cRegardless of that true explanation, the New York Times was already colluding with three anonymous sources to push a completely fake story.\u201d<\/p>\n

One retired general told the Times that this episode is one example of the Trump administration\u2019s trouble being forthright with the public about the war.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe administration seems to have a real hard time being honest about what is going on \u2014 not just about casualties, but about the whole war in general,\u201d retired Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, an Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran, said.<\/p>\n

Downplaying war deaths, Hodges added, shows \u201can unwillingness or inability to aggressively learn from mistakes.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a dignified transfer ceremony at Dover Air Force Base on Wednesday, Trump, 80, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, 46, watched the delivery of the flag-draped caskets of the four service members killed overseas in the last week: Army 1st Lt Tyler James Feehan, 25, of Hawaii, Sgt. Angel S. Rampersad, 28, of New York, Pvt. Isabella Gonzales, 19, of Texas, and Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Feehan, Gonzales, and Rampersad died in Jordan during Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Swinton died on Sunday in Iraq during a controlled explosion of an Iranian drone.<\/p>\n

Hegseth on Tuesday had to face tough questions from lawmakers about the war, now in its fifth month. After estimating the cost of the conflict to be a staggering $37.5 billion and asking Congress for more money, the defense secretary was confronted with his own words about the war from March.<\/p>\n

Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff pressed Hegseth about claiming to have \u201cdestroyed\u201d Iran\u2019s military and about the \u201coverwhelming victory\u201d of Operation Epic Fury\u2014comments that ring hollow as the death toll rises several months later.<\/p>\n
