Thirty-seven days after 84-year-old Sen. Mitch McConnell was admitted to the D.C. hospital after a reported cardiac arrest, a Capitol Police detail is stationed outside the facility.<\/p>\n

\n

But even though Senate is resuming this week, McConnell\u2019s office stubbornly refuses to answer questions about the senator\u2019s condition or when, if ever, he might return to work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Many observers, including some in MAGAworld, continue to push theories that the veteran Kentucky lawmaker is in a vegetative state, brain-dead, or even secretly deceased while his staff cover it up.<\/p>\n

The Daily Beast has visited the hospital over the past few days and observed security vehicles sitting on the street near a driveway that allows staff to get into the hospital through a more discreet entrance.<\/p>\n

A series of unanswered questions were also sent to McConnell\u2019s team, asking when exactly he would return to work, whom he had met with since his contentious \u201cproof of life\u201d photo this month, and whether he had contacted Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who has demanded answers about McConnell\u2019s health status. <\/p>\n

While Beshear has acknowledged that McConnell\u2019s health is a personal matter, he has also suggested that prolonged inability to work raises legitimate questions about representation given the senator has now missed dozens of votes during his absence.<\/p>\n

The Democratic governor, who could appoint a temporary replacement if a Senate vacancy were to be created, is also facing a growing backlash within his own party to be more aggressive against McConnell.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt had been a month before anything had been put out, not even an official statement from Senator McConnell. In fact, I\u2019d gotten two calls from different agencies\u2014not state agencies\u2014suggesting he\u2019s passed,\u201d Beshear said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

McConnell was hospitalized after emergency responders found him at his D.C residence following an apparent cardiac arrest on June 14. <\/p>\n

But until July 12, when his office released a photo and statement, he had not been seen at all\u2014and still technically hasn\u2019t been seen out publicly. <\/p>\n

In the photo, the Kentucky Republican is sitting on what appears to be a hospital bed, dressed in jeans and a button-up shirt, beaming alongside his 73-year-old wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.<\/p>\n

But the image immediately sparked a flood of memes and AI-generated videos mocking it, including from high-profile MAGA figures who questioned its authenticity.<\/p>\n

One image posted by a MAGA supporter swapped the faces of McConnell and his wife\u2014\u201csee how easy that is?\u201d it read. <\/p>\n

A separate video featured McConnell getting up from his hospital bed and doing an energetic dance in the hospital room.<\/p>\n

Another meme featured the senator being visited by Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, and John Wayne\u2014all of whom are dead. <\/p>\n

\u201cNew photo just released of other friends visiting Mitch McConnell today,\u201d it read. \u201cHe really looks great! Hang in there!\u201d<\/p>\n

In his accompanying statement, McConnell said he was \u201cbriefly unconscious\u201d around the time he was first taken to the hospital and has undergone various tests to try to determine what led to his fall. <\/p>\n

He said he was also treated for mild pneumonia and has been moved to a rehabilitation facility.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy doctors have confirmed that I didn\u2019t break any bones or suffer a concussion. I didn\u2019t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don\u2019t have any tumors or hemorrhages,\u201d McConnell said, adding that he was now \u201cregaining my strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

But his ongoing silence has left observers speculating about whether he is genuinely alive and well, while his disappearance has also reignited a broader debate over the gerontocracy in Washington. <\/p>\n

Before he was admitted to hospital in June, McConnell was regularly seen being wheeled around Capitol Hill in a wheelchair, having suffered various falls and spells of freezing in the middle of press conferences.<\/p>\n

But at 84, he is far from the oldest member of Congress, which is often jokingly referred to as America\u2019s most prestigious retirement home. <\/p>\n

In the Senate, Republican elder Chuck Grassley is 92 and still voting. In the House, McConnell\u2019s fellow Kentuckian Hal Rogers is 88, Democrat Maxine Waters is 87, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who is serving her final term, is 86. <\/p>\n

McConnell\u2019s fellow Republican senator, Lindsey Graham, died last week at the age of 71 after suffering cardiac arrest at his Washington, D.C., home.<\/p>\n
