President Donald Trump has been forced to beg his Republican foes for a helping hand as he scrambles to rescue his former personal lawyer\u2019s attorney general nomination. <\/p>\n

The White House has found itself courting GOP Sens. Thom Tillis and John Cornyn\u2013who the president has long vilified for failing his loyalty tests\u2013as they remain noncommittal about supporting Todd Blanche\u2019s nomination in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Politico reports. <\/p>\n

\n

A single Republican \u201cno\u201d vote on the committee could sink Blanche\u2019s nomination.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tillis, 65, and Cornyn, 74, both confirmed the White House\u2019s outreach in interviews with Politico on Capitol Hill Monday evening, while a White House official told the outlet, \u201cthe Administration continues to have active conversations with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. <\/p>\n

Trump has repeatedly insulted both senators, blasting Tillis as a \u201closer\u201d and a \u201cquitter,\u201d while dismissing Cornyn as \u201chopeless.\u201d <\/p>\n

The 80-year-old president effectively ended Cornyn\u2019s Senate career when he endorsed Texas attorney general Ken Paxton over Cornyn in Texas\u2019s Republican primary, leading Paxton to trounce him. <\/p>\n

Both Tillis and Cornyn have been wary of Blanche, the acting attorney general, over his role in signing off on the $1.776 billion \u201cAnti-Weaponization Fund\u201d taxpayer slush fund to compensate Trump\u2019s allies and agreeing to give the Trump family immunity from tax investigations.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are the issues we\u2019re continuing to discuss with the administration to see whether we can get a modification of the settlement agreement,\u201d Cornyn told Politico.<\/p>\n

Asked whether he could secure concessions from Blanche, who had previously resisted amending the agreement he entered into on Trump\u2019s behalf, Cornyn replied, \u201cWell, does he want to get confirmed or not?\u201d <\/p>\n

In response to bipartisan outrage over money from the fund potentially going to rioters who violently attacked the police on Jan. 6, the Justice Department has said the fund would not move forward.<\/p>\n

But Blanche has stopped short of putting the commitment in writing, prompting Cornyn to grill him on the issue during his confirmation hearing before the Judiciary Committee last week.<\/p>\n

Tillis told Politico that he has been encouraged by the Justice Department\u2019s efforts to work with his staff to address his concerns, saying, \u201cI know my staff have been in touch, almost, probably daily.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blanche acquiesced to Tillis\u2019s demand that he meet with Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s victims last week, but many of the women later said the meeting only deepened their frustration. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt had absolutely nothing to do with us, and it had everything to do with Blanche checking a box so that he can get a promotion,\u201d survivor Liz Stein told the hosts of MS NOW\u2019s The Weeknight<\/i> last week.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we had high expectations going into this meeting,\u201d Stein added, \u201cbut I didn\u2019t expect to walk out of the meeting feeling the way we feel right now. It was demoralizing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that Blanche took no accountability for the botched redaction system that saw some victims\u2019 names released in the Epstein files.<\/p>\n

Politico reported Tillis said he would \u201clike to understand what, if any, steps were taken for opening FBI investigations\u2014whether it was a request or whether it was an acceptance to do it,\u201d in regards to Blanche\u2019s plans to bring Epstein\u2019s co-conspirators to justice.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The publication quoted an anonymous source linked to the nomination process who said Tillis will wind up voting to support Blanche, stating \u201cTillis, we think, is squared away.\u201d<\/p>\n
