Do magnets, OK?\u201d Trump told attendees at the Pennsylvania Defense &amp; Innovation Summit on Wednesday. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll tell you how to make money. Do magnets,\u201d he went on. \u201cYou\u2019re doing a lot of great stuff. Do magnets. Because one thing we don\u2019t have, but we are getting close, but do magnets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The president has a long history of confused comments on the topic. He told Fox News in November that magnets were vital to new technologies being developed in the United States, while also marveling that \u201cnobody knows what a magnet is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That is not true. Physicists Hans Christian \u00d8rsted, Andr\u00e9-Marie Amp\u00e8re, Michael Faraday, and James Clerk Maxwell formulated a set of equations in the 19th century to explain how electric currents in certain metals interact to underlie magnetic phenomena.<\/p>\n<p>The advent of quantum mechanics in the 20th century confirmed their theories. Online critics have noted that Trump\u2019s sentiments on the topic recall \u201cMiracles,\u201d a 2010 song by hip-hop outfit Insane Clown Posse, which features the lyric: \u201cF&#8212;ing magnets, how do they work?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Donald Trump Jr., 47, does not appear to have inherited his father\u2019s confusion about magnets\u2014or at least, their ability to attract cash.
