Dick Durbin made the bombshell claim about Trump\u2019s former personal lawyer while speaking to reporters Tuesday, on the eve of Blanche\u2019s confirmation hearing to lead the DOJ on a permanent basis.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201c[Blanche said] \u2018What more can I do? What more can I say? I made a mistake. I don\u2019t want to see the weaponization fund go forward,\u2019\u201d Durbin, the Democratic ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Durbin said he told Blanche to put the admission in writing so it would be more \u201ccredible.\u201d He also claimed Blanche told him he would work with Congress to \u201ccodify the fact that it\u2019s gone and it\u2019s not going to be used again,\u201d adding that it \u201cseemed like a very weak defense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hours after Durbin\u2019s remarks were reported, the DOJ Rapid Response X account suggested the senator misconstrued Blanche\u2019s comments about Trump\u2019s highly controversial taxpayer-funded compensation scheme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith all due respect to Senator Durbin, it is unfortunate that a cordial private meeting was taken out of context,\u201d the account wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Acting Attorney General looks forward to answering any and all questions the Senators have [Wednesday]\u2014in public\u2014before the Senate Judiciary Committee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blanche\u2019s attempt to establish the \u201cweaponization\u201d scheme is set to be a key line of attack for Democrats during the acting attorney general\u2019s confirmation hearing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=3537\">Stephen Miller Melts Down as Trump\u2019s Biggest Deal Implodes<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The $1.8 billion slush fund was announced by the DOJ to compensate Trump allies who claim they were wrongfully persecuted by the Biden and Obama administrations, including those convicted of attacking police officers during the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.<\/p>\n<p>The scheme was announced in exchange for Trump dropping a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service\u2014which taxpayers would ultimately have been on the hook for\u2014alleging that the agency failed to take steps to prevent the leak of his tax returns.<\/p>\n<p>The slush fund received such bipartisan condemnation that the DOJ backtracked and announced last month that it would no longer move forward with it.
