Iced out 60 Minutes<\/i> star correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi has torched CBS News boss Bari Weiss and dared the MAGA-curious editor to fire her.<\/p>\n

Alfonsi accused Weiss of abandoning the show\u2019s mission of fearless and independent reporting, claiming that CBS leadership is now \u201cchoosing access journalism over accountability and protecting power rather than scrutinizing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

That was just one line of a fiery statement in which Alfonsi also revealed that CBS did not renew her contract, which expired Saturday. She said her ouster stems from an \u201ceditorial dispute\u201d over a 60 Minutes<\/i> report that painted the Trump administration in a negative light.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis was not a routine corporate transition; it was a deliberate choice to penalize a journalist for refusing to sanitize factually accurate reporting,\u201d she said. \u201cIt sends a chilling message to the entire newsroom.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alfonsi said she and her agent have been met with \u201csilence\u201d from the network when they inquire about a renewal. She has worked for CBS for nearly 20 years\u2014half of that as a correspondent at 60 Minutes<\/i>. <\/p>\n

\u201cIn the coming days, network leadership may attempt to hide behind corporate euphemisms like \u2018modernization\u2019 and \u2018restructuring\u2019 to explain away my departure,\u201d she said. \u201cDon\u2019t be misled.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cThe message could not be clearer: my time at 60 Minutes is apparently over.<\/p>\n

Alfonsi told The New York Times that she is anxious about the future of the iconic program as long as Weiss leads the network\u2019s news programming. <\/p>\n

\u201cFor the last 60 years, it\u2019s been the same formula: tell the truth, hold the power accountable, don\u2019t blink,\u201d she told the Times. \u201cAnd it\u2019s unclear what next season looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alfonsi, 53, suggested that the show has already gone downhill since Weiss, 42, entered the fold last fall. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a feeling that the wall has come down between editorial independence and corporate interests,\u201d she added. \u201cThe concern is we\u2019re going to end up with a broadcast that looks like 60 Minutes<\/i> but doesn\u2019t have the courage or the character to produce 60 Minutes <\/i>journalism that actually matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

The journalist, who was behind the controversial CECOT jail report that Weiss held but eventually aired, said she has no plans of resigning from CBS News. If Weiss wants her gone, she will have to say as such.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not resigning,\u201d she told the Times. \u201cIf they want me gone because I did my job, they\u2019ll have to fire me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Alfonsi\u2019s fears of a whole new 60 Minutes<\/i> next season may be coming true.<\/p>\n

Not only will the show be without Anderson Cooper\u2014who also reportedly clashed with Weiss over \u201cabnormal\u201d edits\u2014for the first time in two decades, but the Times also reports that Weiss is readying the program for a \u201csignificant shake-up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Among the changes, according to the Times, are introducing \u201ca raft of new contributing journalists,\u201d \u201cshorter digital segments,\u201d and \u201claunching in-person events where fans of the show can interact with 60 Minutes <\/i>stars.\u201d <\/p>\n

The paper reports that the fate of Tanya Simon, the program\u2019s executive producer, remains \u201cunclear.\u201d It adds that Weiss is weighing whether to hire an \u201coutside journalist\u201d to oversee the program alongside Simon.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are afraid, and they\u2019re waiting for something monumental to happen here,\u201d a longtime CBS insider told The Guardian this month.<\/p>\n

That insider added that viewers can expect massive changes to 60 Minutes <\/i>for the show\u2019s 59th season, with whispers of layoffs and even opening up airtime to other CBS journalists, such as the MAGA-curious CBS<\/i> Evening News<\/i> host Tony Dokoupil.<\/p>\n

Legendary 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl, 84, has not hinted at leaving the program, but Status reported last month that she was angered by Weiss offering Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the opportunity to be interviewed by a different CBS journalist.<\/p>\n

Variety reports that veteran correspondents Scott Pelley and Bill Whitaker have time remaining on their contracts. It adds that Whitaker, who has been with CBS since 1984, has no interest in retiring even amid the significant turmoil within CBS\u2019s news division. <\/p>\n

\n

There have been no reports on whether the show\u2019s other correspondents, Jon Wertheim and Cecilia Vega, plan to depart or not.<\/p>\n
