Newsmax host Rob Finnerty opened his show by mocking a MAGA rival\u2019s claim that he had a lengthy conversation with Sen. Mitch McConnell.<\/p>\n

The 84-year-old Kentucky senator has been hospitalized since suffering an apparent heart attack at his home in D.C. on June 14.<\/p>\n

\n

Scott Jennings, CNN\u2019s token conservative, worked with McConnell for several years and claimed on Tuesday to have spoken to the senator that morning. He said the pair spoke for 20 minutes about subjects including Iran, Ukraine, Maine, Jennings\u2019 visit to the newly opened Theodore Roosevelt Library, and Senate history.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible,\u201d Jennings wrote on X.<\/p>\n

Given Jennings\u2019 history with McConnell, some were skeptical about his claim, including Finnerty, who found the timing of the call suspicious.<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody heard from Mitch McConnell for three weeks, and today, you talked to him about Iran and the history of the vice presidency and the history of the Senate? What?\u201d Finnerty said as he opened his show on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry, I don\u2019t buy that at all,\u201d he added. He also called Jennings\u2019 refusal to discuss McConnell\u2019s condition \u201cbizarre,\u201d noting that the CNN pundit had \u201cno problem\u201d speculating about President Joe Biden\u2019s health for four years, but \u201csuddenly he doesn\u2019t want to comment on Mitch McConnell\u2019s health because he\u2019s not a medical expert?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t buy it. Something is not right. Something is going on. That was so weird,\u201d Finnerty continued. <\/p>\n

The 44-year-old host noted that nobody had spoken to McConnell for three weeks following his hospitalization and his aides remained tight-lipped. Then, in just one day, Jennings, as well as Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming all had lengthy phone calls with McConnell.<\/p>\n

Finnerty also discussed Jennings\u2019 claim with his guests later in the show\u2014independent journalist Desir\u00e9e Townsend, who first reported on the 911 call made from McConnell\u2019s home, and Kentucky-based podcaster Andrew Cooperrider.<\/p>\n

Townsend noted that the phone calls with McConnell came soon after McConnell\u2019s wife, Trump\u2019s former Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao, returned from a trip to China to be with her husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat has happened today seems like a narrative shift. They\u2019re trying to shift the narrative that somehow he\u2019s healthy now, we don\u2019t need to look any further. But none of this is adding up,\u201d Townsend said, highlighting that McConnell\u2019s team declined to address the EMS call for three weeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow we\u2019re expected to believe that he somehow beat the less-than-5-percent chance of recovery after 30 days after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest event?\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Cooperrider, who argued that Jennings owes his entire career to McConnell, claimed that the commentator was being used to launder the idea in the media that McConnell was healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe still haven\u2019t seen a photo of Mitch McConnell,\u201d Finnerty noted. \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s a conspiracy theory to ask for a photo of a United States senator, anything to prove this guy\u2019s doing OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jennings\u2019 fellow CNN panelists also took him to task for his attempts to excuse the secrecy surrounding the senator\u2019s condition, with host Kasie Hunt asking him, \u201cWould you encourage him or anyone in his position to be more transparent with his voters about his health than he\u2019s been so far?\u201d<\/p>\n

Panelist Sabrina Singh, who served as deputy Pentagon press secretary under the Biden administration, then pointed out Jennings\u2019 hypocrisy, reminding him that he had repeatedly decried the secrecy surrounding then-Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin\u2019s hospitalizations in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I just jump in here because we have been on multiple shows together where you have brought up Secretary Austin\u2019s hospitalization when I was in the administration… and you were incredibly critical of him not being transparent with the American people and the public about his condition,\u201d Singh said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI find it just so interesting that you\u2019re not being critical of a sitting senator who represents the state of Kentucky, not being transparent with his constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jennings tried to argue that the situations were different, noting that McConnell is \u201cnot the head of the United States Armed Forces who apparently went AWOL while he was secretary of defense.\u201d<\/p>\n
