The phrase \u201cTrump Curse\u201d quickly trended online after America\u2019s resounding World Cup loss against Belgium.<\/p>\n

President Donald Trump admitted on Monday that he\u2019d personally intervened with the FIFA President Gianni Infantino to overturn the suspension of Team USA superstar Folarin Balogun.<\/p>\n

\n

Balogun\u2019s red card in Thursday\u2019s tie against Bosnia and Herzegovina officially ruled him out of the last-16 match-up with Belgium. FIFA sensationally overturned the suspension after Trump\u2019s intervention, prompting accusations of political interference and even corruption.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

However, despite Balogun being able to join the American team thanks to Trump calling in a favor from his friend, they lost 4-1 to a team that had clearly been motivated by the controversy and found themselves dumped out of the tournament.<\/p>\n

The Belgium players even mocked Trump\u2019s influence on the result by imitating his awkward \u201cYMCA\u201d dance after striker Romelu Lukaku kicked the winning goal.<\/p>\n

The Belgians\u2019 social media team joined in the trolling with a post on X showing Lukaku celebrating his goal and the caption: \u201cOverturn this.\u201d#<\/p>\n

After the devastating loss, Trump\u2019s problematic impact on the game was quickly slammed on social media, where \u201cTrump Curse\u201d quickly started trending.<\/p>\n

Progressive news outlet MeidasTouch listed a string of key sporting events Trump championed and also attended in person, which resulted in a loss for his favored team.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe attended the Super Bowl and predicted a Chiefs win, but the Eagles blew them out,\u201d they noted. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe was there when the Commanders hosted the Lions and lost at home. He watched from a suite as Miami fell in the College Football National Championship. He sat in the owner\u2019s suite when the Knicks snapped their huge playoff streak in NBA Finals Game 3. And he attended the Ryder Cup where Europe topped the US team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci also cited the NBA result as evidence of the president\u2019s bad sporting luck, posting on X after the World Cup loss \u201cOuch. Trump curse in full effect like with the Knicks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump, 80, did not attend Monday\u2019s game in Seattle, setting off Monday night for a NATO summit in Turkey.<\/p>\n

The PatriotTakes account called out Trump\u2019s \u201cLoser stench,\u201d while attorney Adam Cohen posted \u201cTrump leans on FIFA to vacate the Balogun red card… The team has a nightmare game…Everything. Trump. Touches. Dies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on MS NOW on Monday, All In<\/i> host Chris Hayes also mocked the idea of Trump being a \u201csuper soccer fan.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president had earlier admitted he did not know what a red card was when he got involved in overturning Balogun\u2019s suspension. Trump claimed, \u201cI\u2019m a person that loves sports and was a good athlete. And I understand sports really well. Really well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be honest, now that he\u2019s touched the World Cup, I think we\u2019re all worse off for it,\u201d Hayes said. \u201cAnd he is being viewed by competitors around the world as a stain on the global pastime.\u201d<\/p>\n

The host added that Trump and FIFA were \u201cmade for each other,\u201d saying it was the \u201cperfect microcosm of everything that\u2019s wrong with both American politics and its current degraded state and global sports and its also current degraded state.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump curse was also invoked by the president\u2019s estranged niece Mary, who pointed out what would have happened if the U.S. had won.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best US men\u2019s team ever loses to Belgium,\u201d Mary posted on X. \u201cIf they\u2019d advanced, there would have been an asterisk next to their victory because of Donald\u2019s interference.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added, \u201cHe casts a shadow over everything. He can only win if he cheats, and he thinks that applies to everybody else. Sad.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Monday, before the game, Trump revealed his interference in the suspension process and said, \u201cIf Belgium beat us then they can be really proud. The other way\u2014if they beat us, I say it was rigged just like the election was rigged in 2020.”<\/p>\n

Sportswriter Kieran Jackson of The Independent said said the result was \u201ckarma\u201d for Trump.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter all the controversy and commander-in-chief-led skullduggery, here came the great American fall from grace,\u201d he wrote in his review of the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cAn aggrieved Belgium outfit firmly made their statement on the pitch to knock the United States out of the World Cup on Monday evening. That\u2019s what you call bad karma, Mr President.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cAnd it felt fitting that FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who took Trump\u2019s call to arms, was present in his VIP seat to bear witness,\u201d saying the overturning of Balogun\u2019s band \u201chad cast a dark cloud over the sporting integrity of this World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackson added, \u201cSometimes, though, sport has its own way of providing poetic justice. And in the Seattle heat, it was a dish best served cold.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump is yet to comment on the U.S. loss. The Daily Beast has contacted the White House for comment.<\/p>\n
