President Donald Trump is blaming vandals after his grifty Reflecting Pool renovation blew up in his face. But the real culprit \u201cdefacing\u201d the nation\u2019s capital is the \u201cvandal-in-chief\u201d himself, a political analyst says. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a symbol of his vandalism, his failure, his inability to take responsibility for anything, his turning Washington into the grimiest, slimiest swamp of all time,\u201d David Rothkopf said on The Daily Beast Podcast<\/i>. \u201cThis is a metaphor for Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe reality is, Trump screws up things all the time,\u201d he said, noting that the Reflecting Pool was \u201cfine\u201d before the 80-year-old president decided it needed a more than $14 million revamp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The administration also awarded contracts tied to the president\u2019s vanity project without competitive bidding. <\/p>\n

Trump awarded a no-bid contract to install an anti-algae water purification system to a company owned by John J. Cafaro, a two-time felon, longtime Trump donor, and the president\u2019s Mar-a-Lago neighbor.<\/p>\n

But the renovations have turned into a disaster before the nation\u2019s eyes as the water has become infested with green algae and the blue paint has begun peeling off in sheets.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s turned into a tourist attraction in downtown D.C. for people to hate on Trump, right? They come down, and they reflect on what a bad president they\u2019ve got,\u201d said Rothkopf, the Daily Beast\u2019s Chief Global Affairs Columnist. \u201cAnd then he\u2019s like, \u2018Holy mackerel, this is a mess. What are we going to do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The president is now blaming his failed project on \u201cvandals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI just inspected it, and could only say to myself, and those gathered around me, WOW, who would do such a thing?\u201d the president fumed in a Truth Social post on Sunday. \u201cSICK, DERANGED PEOPLE! We will fix it?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rothkopf argued that \u201cthe meta thing\u201d is that Trump himself is \u201cthe man who is defacing the nation\u2019s capital.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cWho defaced the Oval Office? Who destroyed the East Wing? Who put a giant claw on the South Lawn of the White House? Who is building a gilded ballroom for billionaires to dance in while Americans starve?\u201d he asked. \u201cWho is building an arch to honor himself? Who\u2019s covering all the horse statues in Washington in gold leaf?\u201d<\/p>\n

Rothkopf added that Trump is \u201ctrying to go further,\u201d noting the president\u2019s push to rename New York City\u2019s Penn Station and Washington Dulles International Airport after himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe didn\u2019t do enough damage as the worst, most tasteless developer in America. Now he\u2019s taken it to another scale with tack,\u201d Rothkopf said.<\/p>\n

When reached for comment, White House spokesman Davis Ingle sent the Daily Beast a recycled statement: \u201cDavid Rothkopf is a far-left loser who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome that has rotted his peanut-sized brain.\u201d<\/p>\n
