This is another concern that the 79-year-old billionaire has downplayed, calling the affordability crisis a \u201choax\u201d cooked up by political foes. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people are really feeling it,\u201d said Republican Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia. \u201cIt\u2019s not just gas prices, food prices, and other things, and I think there\u2019s a level of frustration. So I think the pressure is for the president to reach a peace solution and move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Jeff Van Drew, a centrist from New Jersey who says he supports the broader goal of neutralizing Iran\u2019s nuclear capabilities, was more blunt. \u201cGet it done. Get out,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need an exit strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s main domestic response to the economic fallout has been a push to temporarily freeze the federal gas tax, a proposal widely panned by his own party as offering negligible relief. Republicans say the White House isn\u2019t helping itself with recent side projects, either, and his \u201cI love the inflation\u201d comment this week landed like a grenade in the camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMakes absolutely no sense to me,\u201d said Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, who was beaten by Trump\u2019s hand-picked candidate, controversial Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, in a runoff election last month. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact that we\u2019re not talking about or focused on the things that most people care about at election time, kitchen table issues, I think, is a problem,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the scenes, the frustration runs deeper. Several senior lawmakers, including the House GOP\u2019s top spending leader, Rep. Tom Cole, have complained they\u2019ve been left in the dark about the war\u2019s total cost. Trump has floated a Pentagon funding request of up to $350 billion, due sometime by August, and Republicans are already balking. Don Bacon of Nebraska, who has made a habit in his last days in office of dissenting against the MAGA figurehead. <\/p>\n<p>The prospect of ground troops is where Republican alarm reaches its crescendo. Trump\u2019s threat to seize Kharg Island, Iran\u2019s primary oil export hub, drew swift warnings from within his own party.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t support boots on the ground. I don\u2019t think America has the stomach for that,\u201d said Rep. Nick LaLota of New York, who declined to rule out backing a formal congressional vote to authorize the conflict\u2014against party leaders\u2019 wishes.<\/p>\n<p>Even Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana, one of Trump\u2019s most reliable allies, said he was \u201cworried\u201d about the Kharg Island idea, offering a stark historical warning: \u201cThis is how it started in Vietnam.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Kennedy acknowledged the economic toll but stopped short of condemning the strategy outright, noting he\u2019s not privy to classified briefings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the president has clearly decided to take the pain,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cI think he\u2019s decided that long-term, the benefits of crippling Iran permanently, if possible, are worth the costs to our economy, to our inflation rate, and the world\u2019s economy. I think he\u2019s made that decision, and it has been painful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One Republican lawmaker, granted anonymity to speak candidly, offered a grim outlook for the party. \u201cIt needed to happen even if it costs us our majority. And it might.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Kevin Cramer of North Dakota framed the electoral stakes plainly. \u201cPeople often vote their pocketbook,\u201d he said. \u201cIf people don\u2019t feel secure financially, they oftentimes obviously respond by choosing somebody else.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He added, with unusual candor, \u201cI don\u2019t think people have a great deal of confidence in any of us right now, quite honestly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
