{"id":1139,"date":"2026-06-10T16:09:52","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T16:09:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1139"},"modified":"2026-06-10T16:09:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T16:09:52","slug":"murdoch-paper-tears-into-trumps-self-defeating-obsession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1139","title":{"rendered":"Murdoch Paper Tears Into Trump\u2019s \u2018Self-Defeating\u2019 Obsession"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal\u2019s editorial board has ripped into President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cself-defeating\u201d obsession with tariffs, which the president has clung to despite their economic and political harm. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1138\">Trump\u2019s Former Bunkmate Reveals His Unfortunate Nickname<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Trump has spent the past year and a half attempting to impose crushing duties on products from dozens of U.S. trade partners, including his April 2025 emergency \u201cLiberation Day\u201d tariffs, various rounds of universal tariffs, and additional sector-specific duties.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>After the Supreme Court struck down his emergency tariffs in February, he announced new tariffs based on various statutory authorities, some of which have also been rejected by the courts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>That hasn\u2019t stopped Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, from announcing yet another tariff of 10 to 12.5 percent on products from about 60 countries, prompting the Rupert Murdoch-owned Journal to argue that enough is enough. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMr. Trump\u2019s tariff obsession is a self-defeating act,\u201d the opinion editors wrote. \u201cThere\u2019s been no surge in domestic manufacturing, and they are contributing to rising prices. They are also unpopular, especially in the farm belt.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The duties are a type of import tax paid by American companies, which must either eat the costs or pass them along to their customers. <\/p>\n<p>The latest round of tariffs was announced last week under Section 301 of the 1974 Trade Act, which allows the president to impose tariffs in response to \u201cunfair foreign acts, policies, or practices affecting U.S. commerce,\u201d the Journal reported. <\/p>\n<p>During his first term, Trump used Section 301 to penalize Chinese products for the government\u2019s intellectual property theft and forced technology transfers. <\/p>\n<p>This time, though, the administration has not conducted detailed investigations into each country\u2019s practices, according to the Journal. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1136\">Top DOJ Goon\u2019s Plot to Demand Trump Slush Fund Cash Is Leaked<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Instead, the administration has declared that all 60 countries engage in unfair trade practices by failing to \u201cimpose and effectively enforce a forced labor import prohibition,\u201d thereby lowering supply chain costs. <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Trade Representative Greer concluded that Canada, Ecuador, the E.U., Indonesia, Mexico, and Pakistan all ban imports made with forced labor, but fail to enforce the prohibition, so their products will be subject to a 10 percent tariff. <\/p>\n<p>The rest of the countries\u2014including the U.K., Australia, and Switzerland\u2014don\u2019t have a ban in place, so their products will be hit with a 12.5 percent duty. <\/p>\n<p>That means products from Indonesia and Pakistan\u2014two countries that have been accused of tolerating forced and child labor within their borders, not just their supply chains\u2014will have a lower rate than products from the U.K. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese implausible targets suggest forced labor is a mere pretext to reimpose universal tariffs,\u201d the Journal\u2019s opinion editors wrote. <\/p>\n<p>The Section 301 memo also proposes exemptions for various classifications of imports, including \u201carticles for which additional tariffs may not contribute substantially to the elimination of the investigated acts, policies, and practices described above.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That could include \u201cbasically everything,\u201d according to the Journal. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cLobbyists, on your marks, get set, and go to Howard Lutnick at Commerce or the White House\u2014and don\u2019t forget your campaign checkbook,\u201d the editors wrote. <\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1135\">Embarrassing Epstein Memo From Trump\u2019s Chief Pollster Revealed<\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Daily Beast has reached out to the White House for comment. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Wall Street Journal\u2019s editorial board has ripped into President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cself-defeating\u201d obsession with tariffs, which the president has clung to despite their economic and political harm.
