{"id":1109,"date":"2026-06-10T06:15:44","date_gmt":"2026-06-10T06:15:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1109"},"modified":"2026-06-10T06:15:44","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T06:15:44","slug":"trump-uses-scene-from-iconic-tv-show-to-justify-new-strikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1109","title":{"rendered":"Trump Uses Scene From Iconic TV Show to Justify New Strikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<article>\n<p>President Donald Trump shared a clip from a popular 2000s TV show in an attempt to justify his decision to authorize military strikes on Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/nationwideinterstatemovers.com\/?p=1107\">Fox News Star Laughs in Panicked Trump Goon\u2019s Face<\/a><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Central Command confirmed on Tuesday that \u201cself-defense\u201d strikes on Iran had begun at Trump\u2019s direction in response to the downing of a U.S. helicopter on Monday.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression\u201a\u201d CENTCOM\u2019s statement read.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Shortly after, the 79-year-old president posted a clip from <i>The West Wing <\/i>on Truth Social. <\/p>\n<p>In the clip, taken from the first-season episode \u201cA Proportional Response,\u201d President Jed Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, asks his military advisers what the virtue of a proportional response is after a plane carrying a friend of his is shot down by the Syrian government.<\/p>\n<p>After one of his advisers asks him what other kind of response the U.S. government could possibly make, Bartlet says, \u201cA disproportional response. Let the word ring forth from this time and this place, you kill an American, any American, we don\u2019t come back with a proportional response, we come back with total disaster!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Without context, Bartlet\u2019s tirade reads as an endorsement of an aggressive approach to dealing with perceived enemies. In reality, that was not the message that show creator Aaron Sorkin, himself a vocal critic of Donald Trump, was seeking to communicate.<\/p>\n<p>Bartlet returns to the subject later in the episode in a conversation with his chief of staff Leo McGarry, played by John Spencer. In that conversation, McGarry asks Bartlet if he truly thinks that \u201cratcheting up the body count\u201d will be enough to deter America\u2019s enemies from attacking its citizens.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>After Bartlet says that he does, McGarry is quick to shut him down, telling the president, \u201cThen you are just as dumb as these guys who think that capital punishment is going to be a deterrent for drug kingpins.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs if drug kingpins didn\u2019t live their day-to-day lives under the possibility of execution. And their executions are a lot less dainty than ours and tend to take place without the bother and expense of due process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGarry continues, cautioning Bartlet against pursuing a more aggressive and reactive approach, telling him, \u201cSo my friend, if you want to start using American military strength as the arm of the Lord, you can do that. It\u2019s proportional, it\u2019s reasonable, it\u2019s responsible, it\u2019s merciful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The president\u2019s decision to use a clip from <i>The West Wing <\/i>to justify his decision is an unusual one, considering the show\u2019s clear liberal idealism and creator Aaron Sorkin\u2019s own politics.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter addressed to his wife and daughter following Trump\u2019s election in 2016, Sorkin described Trump as \u201ca thoroughly incompetent pig with dangerous ideas, a serious psychiatric disorder, no knowledge of the world and no curiosity to learn,\u201d adding that his election represented a \u201chorrible\u201d time for the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Beast has reached out to the White House for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s decision to launch retaliatory strikes against Iran comes just one day after he claimed that a deal to end the war was only days away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo or three days,\u201d Trump told a reporter on Monday night following Game 3 of the NBA Finals when asked when a peace deal would be finalized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a good chance of doing it. We should be able to do it in one hour, if you want to know the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re, uh\u2014we\u2019re very close to having a very, very, good, strong, powerful deal,&#8221; he added. \u201cIf we go and bomb, which we can do very easily if we want, and we spend another two or three weeks bombing, they\u2019ll have nothing left whatsoever. But you won\u2019t have the Strait [of Hormuz] open for months.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIf we do the bombing, you know, a lot of people are gonna be killed. Who wants to do that?
